Save a life! Adopt a rescue dog.
We are a foster-based rescue, typically averaging 20 Newfoundlands per year with an unusual spike in 2023 to 33. Relinquished dogs spend time with vetted fosters to assess temperament, behavior, and health. All rescued Newfoundlands are brought up to date on core vaccinations, tested for heartworm, and spayed or neutered either before being placed in their new home or when they become of age to be spayed or neutered. NRF is also committed to providing care for treatable illnesses or injuries before full adoption occurs.
One of our most heartwarming stories in 2023 was a special girl named Maggie, who was found wandering the streets near Orlando. Maggie had noticeably deformed hind legs that pointed in directions no leg should point. But you wouldn’t know Maggie had an issue. She was friends with every human and animal she met and would raise her paw in the air as if saying, “Hey, over here. Do you want to be my friend?”
We got Maggie current on all her shots, started her on preventatives, and then began accessing her legs. Her patella (knee) on both legs were positioned on the outside of her legs. In October, Maggie had surgery on her left leg (the worst of the two) to put the patella back in place. If all goes well, she will not need the surgery on her right leg.
Then there is Nora. She came from a home with her “brother,” who, for most of her 6 years, was not socialized and sporadically taken to the vet. Once with her foster, we updated her on vaccines and addressed a cherry eye. It was determined that she had more than just cherry eye. Her right eye no longer had tear production, making her blind in that eye. The best decision for Nora was to remove the eye. Although we are still working on some separation anxiety, today, Nora is healthy and loving life in her forever home.
The Newfoundland Rescue of Florida operates solely on donations. There are no paid positions, and we rely exclusively on volunteers to foster, call references, and provide transportation.
