We operate Unto These Hills outdoor drama and Oconaluftee Indian Village living history site in Cherokee, NC
Unto These Hills outdoor drama opened in 1950 at Mountainside Theatre in Cherokee, NC. Since then, over 6 million visitors have seen the show. Unto These Hills tells the story of the formation of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians from first contact with Europeans through the years following the removal west on the infamous Trail of Tears.
Oconaluftee Indian Village opened in 1952. The living history site is an important cultural attraction that demonstrates the Cherokee way of life both before and after European contact. Visitors are guided through a replica of a 18th century Cherokee village and witness local artisans creating traditional Cherokee crafts. Visitors also learn about the clan system, government, and matriarchal society of the Cherokee. The tour ends in the square grounds with demonstrations of traditional dances.
Cherokee Historical Association's mission is to share Cherokee history and culture and the triumphant story of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians with the world. We do this through excellence in the arts, education, living history, and cultural preservation.
